The Buffalo Nickel
by Taylor Morrison

The early life of James Earle Fraser gave him the skills, desire, and opportunity to become a great sculptor. As a youngster he was privileged to get to know real plains Indians, and to listen to their stories of great buffalo herds and of trials arising from the coming of the white man on trains. There, he learned how to carve.

What was his famous sculpture of the exhausted Indian on his tired horse? What led him to do the sculpture? Where did he receive a prize for it?

What great honor was bestowed upon Fraser by the President of the United States?
