| Spending the school year drilling
on tests makes about as much sense as milking a cow all day and never sending
her out to pasture! Thirty-one
weeks in a pasture of stimulating interaction with rich literature and
two
weeks in concentrated practice on test-taking skills will produce what
we all seek most for our children: high levels of curioisity and
compassion, enthusiasm for learning, a renewed spirit, and a deep love
of reading. High test scores are a natural consequence, a by-product,
not the product itself! Tests are no more the source of learning
than the moon is the source of light. Both are reflectors.
